Our family motto (when it comes to picking homes):
Make America beautiful one house at a time.
So we picked a place this time with a little land and great bones. It only needed our personal touch, and some freshening up. The décor was circa 1997. The guestroom was one of the first rooms I wanted to check off the list (after painting every.single.ceiling. (2300 sq. ft.). My plumber may have helped a little.
Living away from family means steady visitors, and I wanted a peaceful space for them to land.
Our new house had been smoked in since it was built and had damage mostly around the upper walls and ceiling. There are two things that I just can't do in my home... bad smells and wallpaper.

The carpet and walls were permeated with smoke.
I was looking for a neutral with a hint of color. A friend had recently painted her kitchen SW Silver strand and I was smitten. Silver strand will change from gray to blue to green depending on the time of day. Have I mentioned my love for SW paints?
We also decided the carpet couldn't stay.... I've never been a fan of carpet.
My plumber is also good at laying wood floors. Room by room we replaced carpet with hickory. Once again we got flooring from Lumber Liquidators. This hickory has an awesome warranty on the finish and was very easy to put down. You can find it here. We also love to install new ceiling fan in each room, the contrast of the dark wood against the bright white ceiling is beautiful.

What do you think of this color? I love how it compliments the flooring and neutral décor and curtains! I made the same curtain and rod that I used for our boy room, more to come on that project.
I also made a few signs for our guestroom, and added a few pillows. You can find the PRAY BIG pillow here and the decorative pillow here. I love pillows from H&M Home, they are fairly cheap and high quality. The also have down inserts for a very good price. You can find the sheets here, these are grey paisley. The lack of furniture has a little to do with the fact that I don't like clutter, and a lot to do with the fact that we haven't had a spare bedroom in a few years.

I bought this great cross stitch piece for $3 at a garage sale. I plan on using it for a pattern and making more for gifts in the future. It's perfect for our family!

I used jute rope and these decorative mini clothes pins to create a 'welcome' for our guests, the kids had fun making art and personalized notes. We added a few cute pictures for them to look at.

I still need to make a headboard. Looking forward to telling you more about that!
